There’s no prerequisite to go to Europa. Any able-bodied person can volunteer. Rich, poor, genius, or uneducated can sign with any one of the big extra-teran corporations and go to see another planet in our solar system with their very own eyes.

But, the rich and genius don’t go to Europa. They don’t sign the terms of enlistment contract or get taught the dangers of waging war in the vacuum. None of them have looked into the great red eye of Jupiter. And Jupiter will never watch as they bleed out on the berg. Red staining the cold, crystalline surface of its child moon.

No, Jupiter only watches us. The debtors, the desperate, and the mercenaries.

I was the former. A man locked into a lifetime, and then some, of living at the bottom of the barrel.

That’s how I found myself walking through the double high doors of Orbital Ventures’ Operations Launch Center (OLC) outside Columbia, South Carolina, USA. Just me and something like two hundred other men getting dropped off by friends, family, and branded buses from the airport and city center.
